A Party Weekend

Well, it was a successful weekend for those people throwing parties. I was able to make it to two of them. One, in honor of the underclassmen, thrown by my good friend, Susan. The other, a gathering over at Saint James, with Kristen, Anna and Chris. A big thank you to all four of them for great parties. Plus, Anna did a wonderful job with her chocolate fondue.Other than spending time with lots of fun people, I pretty much procrastinated this weekend. We all watched the Super Bowl yesterday, and were surprised at the horrible commercials. Actually, I should correct myself - the horrible ABC promo commercials. I really think that there were more promotions for ABC shows than there were actual commercials during the Super Bowl. It was pretty shameful.

Brrr… it’s mighty cold

It’s definitely quite cold outside. As I write this, it is two degrees outside with a windchill of negative 15, just to give you an idea. Of course, the meterologists are laughing, as is mother nature, because we haven’t even hit the coldest day yet. I guess this is only the tip of the iceberg, because there’s more arctic air heading our way. Supposedly, it’s supposed to get down to negative three tonight, so I’m definitely glad to have my electric blanket ready and primed for action. As for the rest of my day, it was quite lively. Amidst classes and work, I was given the privelage to sing for our mass for life. The Archbishop of Milwaukee came and celebrated in Gesu church at noon, for the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. It was a great mass, and it has been a long time since I have seen Gesu packed as well as it was today. (The only exception being the mass of the Holy Spirit.)

After classes, I came back to the apartment for an hour or so to finish a few random tasks of the day and then went off to the Joan of Ark chapel, where we celebrated mass once again this evening, and all discussed the cold weather as we walked back to our respective campus locations. That’s right - it’s mighty cold out tonight. Even though I had a hat on my head, I could still feel the cold air whipping right through it. I’m very glad to have a nice, warm apartment to come back to and study. Others, however, aren’t so fortunate, so please remember those people who must battle the cold tonight or don’t have enough money to afford to heat their homes. May they stay warm and safe.

The weekend

Well, it’s finally the conclusion of a long weekend, and I’m planning on hitting the books tomorrow, since Marquette has the day off. I’ll be sleeping in until a decent hour and then reading all day, to catch up and make sure that I am on top of all my assignments for this semester. But, for a weekend wrap-up, on Friday, I ended up playing about five hours’ worth of video games with friends - it was a great time waster. Saturday was winter flurry, our big dance on campus, which was fun although the DJs could have used a little work. Finally, I spent most of today watching movies. Some friends and I decided to watch The Fellowship of the Ring and then go to see The Two Towers in the theater. It was quite fun. Now, as I am journaling, I am actually starting to feel a little tired. So, before I head off to bed tonight, I’m going to finish a little pleasure reading to pump myself up for tomorrow, when I have to read Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species, which I’m not looking forward to. He’s a bit on the dry side for my tastes, but I need to finish it for an anthropolgy class in order to graduate. Ah, the fun of going to a liberal arts college that requires you to be a well-rounded student. I’m not complaining too much, at least the class seems fun, so far. I’ll let you know more about that one as I progress.

New teachers, new classes

Well, to give a formal/offical update on this site, my classes are going pretty well, so far. There is one small exception - the fact that one of the teachers in my business class seems to want to treat me as if I had never been enrolled in the business college before. It’s sort of different, and so I’m not sure what to think about that. Other than the business fiasco, I’ve been enjoying myself. I don’t have any class on Friday, so that makes my schedule pretty easy as well as exciting.

The one other class that I’m a little worried about is my anthropology class. I was too lazy to want to have class at 8am, so I opted for the upper division anthropology class at 9:35. However, this means that I am going to have to read Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species, which is a somewhat thick book to read, however, I think I can manage it.

My computer science class, theology class and photography class are all going to be great. I’m excited to be learning photography and all of the things that go into a good photo. As I take more and more pictures, I’ll be posting them up in the photo gallery and keep you updated as to when I do that, so stay tuned for photos.

Finally, I’m really not sure why my business teacher would feel like treating me as if I had never taken a business class before. She told me today that one of the prerequisites for the class was taking the introduction to information technology course which is offered as a survey to the field. I don’t want to knock the business college, but I really think that I have the required skill set to take an upper-division IT course, based upon my computer science background and my internship background in business. However, just to be on the safe side, I emailed the professor today (the real one is out of town for this week) and asked for her suggestion. I still think it’s frustrating the way that the business college seems to have their own aura and separate personality from the rest of the university. It’s pretty weird. Has anyone else at Marquette experienced this feeling, or am I alone on this one?

Well, that’s about it for now, have a great Thursday!

Back on campus

Well, today was the official start of classes for the spring semester. I had my first one, and it wasn’t too bad. Of course, I will be pretty bored during the day, since my first class starts at 5:45pm, but that gives me plenty of time to sleep in and do errands. (Hey, I’m a senior, I think I deserve that!) So, that’s what I did for pretty much the whole day. I had to get my car over at Firestone, since the alternator decided to go, and we were lucky it didn’t happen on the drive up from Kansas City.As for classes, they aren’t too bad, if you don’t mind walking out and about in the cold, Wisconsin wind. It’s currently around 15 degrees outside, which, in itself, is not too bad. However, when you combine that with a standard windspeed of 20 to 30 miles an hour, the windchill is enough to make your spine stand straight up, and chill you pretty bad. But, it seems like most people are managing it.

Tonights activities, aside from class, include doing some reading and going to see the hypnotist over in the varsity theater. He always delivers a great show, and I’m excited to see what he’ll get the people to do this year. Definitely some quality entertainment. And, that’s about all that’s happened over the past few days, I’ll update more, later.
