Norton Internet Security

Well, it never fails. I get the feeling that I want to upgrade to the latest version of Norton’s Internet Security product and everything goes awry. Last night, I bought the new download for NIS2004 and proceeded to try and install the whole thing right away. Did it work? Of course not. In fact, I got this really informative error: “The installation encountered errors and cannot continue installing.” Amazing. From this little error, I can figure out exactly what is going on and what to do about it… So far, Symantec’s email support has been helpful but nothing they have suggested works. I have tried removing all of the previous NIS2003 installation but the darn thing still won’t install. It’s getting pretty frustrating.

Since I’m betting that Google will index this story soon, if I ever get this software to install, I’ll update this story and post exactly what steps I took to get the whole thing to run. I just hope I don’t have to spend a weekend rebuilding my operating system so that I can use my new purchase. I know it’s been a while since I’ve formatted and re-installed, but it seems as though this latest install of Windows has been pretty stable. I haven’t had too many problems with it. Of course, I’m sure that there is some OS rot in there somewhere, I just haven’t seen too many signs of it yet. The other problem is that I don’t want to spend my Saturday ghosting the whole machine, reinstall my original ghost image and then spend another hour or two patching and updating the system. I would rather just go back to NIS2003, if it ever installs on my system, and be done with the whole thing.

Well, that’s about it for me now. Hope everyone is having a great week.

Yeah, I’ve tried that. From looking at the installer files, I think it might be a problem with the Microsoft Installer. I’m going to mess with it over the weekend. It looks like it’s getting a mutex and decrementing something when it should be incrementing.
