I’m currently typing this over bluetooth from my new iMac. It’s a beautiful thing and I’m quite happy with it. However, I did have a bit of a rough time starting out. Fresh out of the box, everything worked wonderfully. However, as soon as the computer started up, it realized that it needed to install some updates.
“That’s fine,” I said.
“I’m installing them right now,” said my iMac.
Unbeknownst to me, it was also hosing the entire system. I suspect that one of the software updates was corrupt or corrupted something, as when the computer rebooted, everything was broken and wouldn’t launch. After a friendly call to the apple support desk, I reloaded my system, which fixed the problem. There was only one other thing remaining - after reloading the system, iPhoto wouldn’t start up. It kept telling me that it was damaged.
After two more chats with Apple’s support desk and getting nowhere, I finally called and mentioned that I thought the installer disk was bad and they decided to ship me a new set of disks. I kept working on the problem and got this brilliant idea (that I’m surprised that no one at Apple mentioned to me) to delete iPhoto and then do a system restore. I did exactly that, deleting all instances of anything the finder returned with the name iPhoto in it. Did my system restore, and like magic, my iMac is working exaclty the same as if I had unpacked it a few minutes ago.
I finally got to mess around in Garageband this evening, and came up with a pretty cool song. Hopefully, I will be able to post it up on the site soon so everyone can hear my click and drag magic. I’m just excited to have everything working properly again. It definitely was a good learning experience and I now know a myriad of ways to troubleshoot my machine if anything ever goes wrong again.
Now, my new project is to start doing video capture in order to finish up these home videos I’ve been meaning to polish off. Anyone have a good suggestion for a good video capture device to use with my new Mac?
